Chelsea Hill

Storytelling plays a major role in Chelsea’s life and practice. Her drawings and collages are the incoherent remnants of a fully formulated concept. When coming up with a narrative or an idea for a portrait and beginning to draw it out, she discovers that over time the idea for the image changes. Her characters quickly develop wants and needs throughout the production of the image, and Chelsea often finds herself following their instructions, keeping in mind that she is still in control of the final product. This collaboration with her creations results in a visual vocabulary that interrogates the original concept. Chelsea received her MFA from California College of the Arts in San Francisco in 2015.
